Ingredients

  • 1 shot of espresso (approximately 30 ml)
  • 150-180 ml of plant-based milk (barista edition recommended for foam)
  • Optional: maple syrup or coconut sugar to sweeten

Preparation steps

  1. Make a shot of espresso in a heat-resistant cup or glass.
  2. Heat the plant-based milk in a small saucepan or using a coffee machine steam wand. The goal is to obtain a silky texture and a thin layer of foam (micro-foam). The ideal temperature is around 60-65°C.
  3. If you are using a sweetener, add it to the espresso and mix.
  4. Hold the cup of espresso at a slight angle. Pour the hot milk in a steady, thin stream into the center of the espresso.
  5. When the cup is half full, upright it and bring the carafe closer to the surface of the coffee. Start drawing your design (for example, a heart) by moving the jug back and forth while pouring the milk.
  6. Finish by lifting the jug to cut off the flow of milk and create a clean line.
Chef’s tip

The key to a good latte art is micro-foam: a well-textured, shiny milk without large bubbles. Practice frothing the milk before attempting the drawing. Oat or soy 'barista' plant-based milks are generally best for latte art.
